Tank stuck in the river in Ladakh, 5 soldiers martyred.
The soldiers were returning from exercise, the accident happened at 1 o'clock in the night due to rising water in the river.
Five army personnel were washed away due to the rising water level of the Shyok River near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Nyoma-Chushul area of Ladakh. All have died. Among them was a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO). The incident occurred around 1 am on Friday (28 June). The information came out on Saturday (29 June).
According to the news agency PTI, the army soldiers were returning late at night in a T-72 tank after a military exercise. The military tank was crossing the Shyok River in Sasar Brangsa in Eastern Ladakh when the water level suddenly increased and the soldiers along with the tank started drowning in the river.
According to Leh's Fire and Fury 14 Corps, the accident occurred near Mandir Mor, 148 km from Chushul of LAC. Rescue teams reached the spot, but due to the strong current and water level in the river, the soldiers could not be saved.
The bodies of the five jawans have been recovered. They have been identified as Risaldar MR K Reddy, Dafadar Bhupendra Negi, Lance Dafadar Akdum Tayyabam, Havaldar A Khan, and Nagaraj P.
Defense Minister expressed grief over the accident
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed grief over the accident. He wrote on X- Saddened by the death of five of our brave army personnel in an accident while taking a tank across the river in Ladakh. We will never forget the sacrifice of our brave soldiers for the nation.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also expressed condolences. He wrote on X, The news of the martyrdom of five Indian Army soldiers in an accident during the military exercise of crossing the river of the tank in Ladakh is sad. In this hour of grief, we all stand with the families of the martyred soldiers.
