The Central Government has filed an affidavit on the petition filed in the Supreme Court for compensation to the kin of those who lost their lives due to the Corona epidemic. In this, the Center has said that the government will not be able to give a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who have died due to corona. Compensatory compensation under the Disaster Act is applicable only in case of natural calamities like earthquake, flood etc. The government's argument is that it would be wrong if compensation is given on death due to one disease and not on the other.

In the 183-page affidavit, the Center has also said that such payments are made from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) available with the states. If the states were directed to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation for every death, their entire fund would be exhausted. With this, along with the ongoing fight against Corona, it will be impossible to fight against disasters like floods, cyclones.

The Center told the court that all deaths due to corona should be recorded as Kovid deaths only. No matter where those deaths took place. Earlier, in many media reports, the issue of rigging in the data of deaths due to corona was raised in more than 6 states. In the affidavit filed in the court late last day, the government said that action would be taken against the doctors who were negligent in the matter.

Till now only the death of corona infected in hospitals was recorded as Kovid death. Even deaths at home or at the parking or gate of the hospital were not being recorded in the Covid records. Because of this, discrepancies were being seen in the death figures.

Government's argument -

More than 3.85 lakh people have lost their lives due to the pandemic. This figure may increase further in the coming days. Giving compensation can have an impact on the fight against Corona and the expenditure on health. It may cause harm instead of doing good.

At present, the Center and the states are getting less revenue. In such a situation, it is very difficult to pay 4-4 lakh rupees for the deaths due to corona. If the states were forced to do this, then other important works of disaster management.

In this financial year, Rs 22,184 crore was given to the states in SDRF. A large part of this is being spent in fighting Corona. The Center has announced a Prime Minister's Garib Kalyan Package of 1.75 lakh crores. Apart from free ration to the poor, many things like giving direct money to old, disabled, disabled women, giving insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh to 22.12 lakh frontline corona workers.
